Swaraj. Freedom. Independence. For 80 years, we have inherited it with pride. All thanks to those who have been giving their lives, their youth, their homes, and even peace so that our nation can carry the vision for present and future generations. The price for this freedom has been already paid. So, here’s what we must ask ourselves: are we honouring it the right way?
Independence isn’t limited to the state of being politically free. A nation also has to break free from the shackles of the things that quietly weaken it from within.
Ignorance: The Root Social Evil
Ignorance is often mistaken for a lack of education. But a person can be highly educated and still be ignorant about a community, a social issue, or an experience they have never taken the time to understand.
Ignorance is less about how much we know and more about what we choose not to question. When that happens on a larger scale, the consequences go beyond individual beliefs. Assumptions turn into social prejudice. Half-understood ideas become accepted as truth. Fear creates panic, and panic can lead to poor decisions. Complex problems get reduced to convenient explanations instead of being addressed with patience and pragmatism.
A nation cannot progress by simply knowing more. It needs people willing to question what they believe, understand what they do not know, and respond to problems based on reality rather than assumption. That is why true independence also means becoming free from the ignorance that prevents us from thinking clearly.
Information Is Not the Same as Truth
Misinformation is one of the clearest threats to independent thinking today. The problem is that it rarely stays as information. It becomes opinion, opinion influences behaviour, and behaviour can create real social consequences.
Often called the fourth pillar of democracy, journalism is expected to question power, verify information, and help people understand what is happening around them. But the race for TRPs, clicks, shares, and attention can sometimes reward what is sensational over what is accurate, immediate over what is considered, and emotionally charged over what is nuanced.
This does not make journalism the enemy. It makes responsible journalism more important, especially with AI being used to alter the truth.
If we want to remain independent in our thinking, we also need to ask, “Where did this come from? What is missing? Are all the sources verified?"
Bias Grows Where Truth Is Weak
Bias and prejudice is where social evils like classism, colourism, casteism, and even communism take birth. It does not begin with hatred alone. Ignorance leaves room for it and misinformation gives it material. It begins with a narrative that's one sided.
A community gets described in one way for years. A region is reduced to a stereotype. A language is treated as less refined. A profession is mocked. A section of society is left out of the conversation. That is how bias becomes a cultural habit. As soon as the other side of the story or the truth is silenced or not represented accurately.
Our Role as Creators
We cannot be like the Spiderman standoff meme. Each one of us has the responsibility to rid our nation of these roadblocks. The creative industry is blessed with the eye for truth and ideas. We shape how these ideas look, sound, and travel. Our decisions affect public trust. If we create only for attention, we feed the noise. If we create with awareness, we can help people think clearly.
This is where freedom becomes practice. It asks us to question what we consume, what we believe, what we repeat and what we create. It asks us to build independent and truthful opinions, free from hatred, prejudice, and ignorance.
Independence Day should remind us of the country we received. It should also remind us of the country we are responsible for shaping.
So, today we leave you with this thought: The price of freedom has already been paid. But the work of honouring and protecting it is still ours. JAI HIND!!
